I haven't had this little confidence in what I considered a likely win in the preseason in quite some time. Both teams are just way different than what we expected them to be, especially this late in the season. The offensive train wreck was obvious but I really didn't like what I saw from UTSA's backup linebackers against FIU and they'll have an even tougher task defending UAB's collection of running threats this week.

Let's talk big picture. Pragmatically speaking, UTSA has had a successful season so far, sitting at 5-3 including their first P5 win. Alumni and student fans have only seen one loss at home, a 2-point game that came down to the final play. Any other season and this would be a great setup for entering the home stretch. This season, however, injuries are building up and play calling is stagnant while potentially the hardest stretch of games remains. For the sake of the program, the coaches need to adapt now in order to continue to have a successful season and reach a bowl berth. Unfortunately, Birmingham Bill's Blazers will have their ears pinned back.

Saturday's game is intriguing. UAB is in their rebirth season after not having football in 2015 and 16. All the Blazers have done this year is surprise everyone, including probably themselves, by getting to six wins so quickly. The fact they've reached their goal could be beneficial for UTSA who is one win away from reaching bowl eligibility. Combine that with the fact that UTSA is back home in the Alamodome and will be looking to please the nervous fanbase and I have to lean UTSA in this one.

I did not have this game a toss up in the preseason, honestly I don’t think anyone did, but here we are. UAB comes in about as hot as any team in CUSA after beating Southern Miss and putting up 52 points on Rice. The Blazers are a well balanced offense that does a lot of what UTSA wants to do except they do it better. Defensively they are above average letting up about 26 points per game.
UTSA needs to get out of this offensive funk they have gotten themselves in. If they cannot a team that has not played football the last two years is going to come into San Antonio and run them out the building.
