The I-35 Rivalry returns to San Marcos this weekend. The last time it was played at Texas State the UTSA Roadrunners had a shiny new head coach named Jeff Traylor. Now Traylor is a seasoned veteran going against a Texas State squad in its second year under his former quarterback at Gilmer, GJ Kinne. UTSA has gone five-for-five in the series winning every previous get-together. This is probably the best chance Texas State has had to get the first win in the series that has seen all but one game decided by single digits. I expect another close game and I hope I am proven wrong but I think this is the year the Bobcats get a win over the Roadrunners.

This feels like one of the most anticipated games in a few years. Two well-matched teams are getting a crack at one another with a TON of bragging rights on the line. Texas State and UTSA both comically come off a week one victory that is somewhat identical in tone. Nevertheless, this week brings us the coveted, I-35 Rivalry, and I don’t think anyone could have set up a better measuring stick game than this one. I expect a back-and-forth battle, close to the very end. It only feels right.

UTSA and Texas State each got out to a hot start in last week's season opener, then cooled down a bit. Perhaps both were looking ahead to the rivalry game. For a number of reasons, I don't think week 1 will be a reliable predictor of week 2, for good or bad.

Coach Traylor has said in the past that winning or losing can come down to which team wants it more. But UTSA needs to solidify a few critical pieces like line play and special teams, or it won't matter: Texas State will take advantage and upend the Roadrunners for the first time ever.

The I-35 Showdown is upon us again as the Roadrunners head to San Marcos to face the Texas State Bobcats. Both teams won their opening-week games to begin the 2024 season 1-0. UTSA leads the all-time series 5-0, and this contest could go a long way toward determining the Group of Five participant in the new 12-team College Football Playoff.

Both the Roadrunners and Bobcats got off to fast starts last weekend against Kennesaw State and Lamar, then had to hold on for their wins. This could be the Bobcats' best team in the series, and they are playing at home. Still, I like the Roadrunners to get the win in one of the best games of the weekend.

UTSA vs Texas State is going to be an intense, physical, high-energy matchup. I will be paying attention to who is going to lead the dance of this game. I think the Roadrunners will come in less emotional and more focused. I am also going with a gelled core unit over a Frankenstein team yet to prove they’re actually alive.

The next chapter in this rivalry will take place in San Marcos this Saturday. The Roadrunners will face the best iteration of the Bobcats they’ve ever gone up against. Will that be enough to finally take down UTSA, is the question. If it does not happen this year, when will it? Unfortunately for the Bobcats, it will have to wait at least one more year. The Roadrunners win a close one that will go down to the final possession.
