Fall is right around the corner. The Roadrunners will report for fall camp on July 31st for year two of the Frank Wilson era. Today we will look at the defensive backs.
UTSA lost a staple of their defense in Michael Egwuagu due to graduation, but they return some very solid pieces at safety. The group will be anchored by senior Nate Gaines at free safety that looks solidify his career as one of the best defensive backs to come through UTSA. Second in the two-deep this fall is Carl Austin III who has been a solid backup these past few years.
At the RAM position junior Daryl Godfrey will take over full time. Godfrey won the Most Improved Defensive Player award this spring and looks to be a candidate for breakout player of the year. Behind him as of now is junior JaColbie Butler who is transitioning to safety from cornerback.
LION will be manned by junior C.J. Levine who like Godfrey will take over a safety position for the first time. Levine has played great in his reserve role so far and fans should fully expect Levine to excel as a starter. Backing up Levine is Brennan Johnson who cracked the two-deep after a solid spring.
UTSA has something not many G5 have. They have not one, not two, but three, possibly four 6’0" corners they can use at any time. Senior Devron Davis has the potential to put together one of the best seasons at corner fans have ever seen. Davis has been generating some draft buzz this offseason and if he follows up with a great season he might be candidate to get the a call this upcoming draft. Backing up Davis right now is true sophomore Teddrick McGhee who had really solid season as a true freshman. He will be an all-conference selection one day.
San Antonio native Austin Jupe will handle the other corner spot. Jupe has been through a lot since he transferred to UTSA from Baylor. He started at safety and eventually moved to corner and after solid season he will get the nod to start at corner. The spring two-deep has McGhee backing up Jupe, but that won’t happen for obvious reasons. UTSA brings in a really good crop of freshman corners. I expect for Samuel Barnes to backup Jupe when the depth chart for the Houston game comes out.
