UTSA men 103, FAU 112 F/OT

UTSA has come close to getting upset wins a few times this season but in each case they came up short. On Saturday the Roadrunners welcomed the number 23 ranked Florida Atlantic Owls to the Convocation Center and a crowd of 1,929. UTSA led for most of the day but the Owls were able to force overtime and then outscored the Roadrunners 21-12 in the extra period to leave San Antonio with a 112-103 win.

The Roadrunners (7-12, 1-5 AAC) came out of the gate firing, making their first three shot attempts--all from three point range--to build a 9-0 lead. UTSA led by as much as 16 points in the first half and led for 35:37 of the game. It appeared for a long time that UTSA might pull off the upset of Florida Atlantic and get a win over a ranked opponent for the first time since beating then-number 13 Arizona State 87-85 on December 18, 1994.

Instead Florida Atlantic (15-4, 5-1 AAC) became the first ranked team to beat UTSA in the Convocation Center since the Owls beat the Roadrunners 83-64 last season.

Florida Atlantic closed out the first half on a 29-17 run to cut UTSA's lead to 53-49 at the intermission. The Owls then opened the second half on a 5-0 run to take their first lead of the afternoon at 54-53.

That was the first of nine lead changes in the second half and overtime. UTSA and Florida Atlantic would also be tied seven times. The Owls would tie the game at 91 with three free throws from Johnell Davis with 16 seconds left in regulation.

The final tie of the day came in overtime when Florida Atlantic tied the score at 96 in the midst of a 9-0 run that saw the Owls take control of the game.

Jordan Ivy-Curry led the Roadrunners with a career high of 38 points, the first Roadrunner to score 30 in a game since Japhet Medor against Rice last season. Ivy-Curry was just two points away from becoming the first Roadrunner to score 40 points since Jhivvan Jackson scored 45 against Old Dominion in February of 2020.

Christian Tucker had a double-double with 19 points and 12 assists. Isaiah Wyatt was the other Roadrunner in double figures with 14 points.

UTSA will be back in the Convocation Center on Wednesday night to take on Tulane. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.

UTSA women 53, UAB 54

The UTSA women's basketball team took a four-game winning streak into Birmingham and had a chance to move up the conference standings against UAB. The Roadrunners entered the game with a 4-2 record in conference, half a game back of the Blazers who entered with a 4-1 record in conference.

UTSA got off to a good start against the Blazers by scoring the first six points of the game. The Roadrunners built their lead to eight by the end of the first quarter. In the second quarter UTSA continued to add to its lead. The Roadrunners led by as many as 15 points in the second quarter. By halftime UAB had cut the Roadrunners lead to 10 points, 31-21.

In the third quarter the Roadrunners were able to maintain their lead but the Blazers were able to cut the deficit to six, 43-37, going into the fourth quarter.

UAB opened the fourth quarter on a 6-0 run to tie the game at 43 and then took their first lead of the afternoon, 47-45, halfway through the fourth quarter. The Roadrunners retook the lead at 49-48 before UAB finished the game on a 6-4 run to escape with a 54-53.
