The early 2020s have been a golden era for offense at UTSA. Since Jeff Traylor took over the program the Roadrunners offense has seen its total yardage increase each year.
UTSA has scored at least 500 points in each of the last two seasons after scoring just 339 in 12 games in 2020. Prior to 2021, the most points a Roadrunner team had scored in one season was 379 in 2016.
Even more impressive is that UTSA's offense has continued to thrive even as it prepares to play for its third offensive coordinator in as many seasons. Barry Lunney led the offense in 2021 before being hired as OC at Illinois. His replacement, Will Stein picked up where Lunney had left off last year before getting hired to run the offense at Oregon. Now the Roadrunners will enter their first year in the American with Justin Burke handling the offense.
The greatest reason for UTSA's continued success in recent years has been the health of Frank Harris. Since the start of the 2020 season Harris has played in 39 of the Roadrunners 40 games. UTSA has also benefited from the NCAA rule allowing all players who were rostered in 2020 to get an extra year of eligibility. This year will be the final run for a few key members of the recent Roadrunners but there are equally talented players waiting in the wings for their chance.
