UTSA picks up their first conference win of the season with a win over Rice. Here are our starting 11 from this weekend.

1. Marcus Davenport: What more can we say? He’s a dominant force at DE, and you can make the argument that he singlehandedly kept us in that game yesterday. Career high 11 tackles, 3.4 for loss, with 2 sacks and a fumble returned for touchdown. Marcus making that money week in and week out.

2. Tyrell Clay: The former walk-on from Corpus Christi replaced a struggling Jalen Rhodes and provided a spark almost immediately. Finished the game with a career high 153 yards rushing on only 11 carries. Is it time for him to become the featured back?

3. Dalton Sturm: The passing numbers aren’t gorgeous as he threw for only 134 yards on 21 attempts. He did have a Dalton Sturmesque TD pass to Brady Jones while on the run from heavy pressure, but his biggest impact was running the ball. Dalton finished with 105 yards rushing. Many of those yards extending drives on 3rd down.

4. Clayton Johnson: Well hello there Clayton Johnson. The former Oklahoma State Cowboy replaced Devron Davis and responded with 2 interceptions. The 2nd a beauty on a jump ball that he ripped away from the WR in the 4th quarter. His speed on the outside was a needed addition to the defense.

5. Kevin Strong: Kevin played a really Strong game inside for UTSA. The 3 tackles won’t flash on the stats page, but he did have 1.5 tackles behind the line of scrimmage and contributed a sack.

6. Marcos Curry: It’s nice to have a senior like Marcos to bring in when there are injuries. Josiah going down the very first drive could have been a death blow to a team already bit by the injury bug many times over, but Marcos came in and was a steadying force for the defense. He had 6 tackles and 2 Quarterback hurries for the game.

7. Jalen Rhodes: Does it look like he’s just a step slow to anyone else? The staff hasn’t hinted at injury, but my eyes tell me something is just a bit off. That all being said, he still provided a strong 60 yards rushing on 4.9 yards per carry.

8. Brady Jones: Solid game from the senior slot WR as he contributed 57 yards on 4 catches. The biggest of which was a diving catch in the endzone on a play where he had to break off his route to help a scrambling Sturm find an open WR.

9. Andrew Martel: Martel is a guy that I think needs more snaps. Anytime he’s in the game he just seems to be around the ball and making plays. Contributed with a sack and 3 tackles.

10. Yanni Routsas: A very strong game from Routsas. Two kicks of over 50 yards and two more pinning Rice inside their own 20.

11. La’kel Bass: Bass had a strong 8 tackles in a game where his LB partner was injured on the very first drive.
