Predictions: UTEP

UTSA hosts UTEP with a chance to reach four wins. The Roadrunners are favorites at home against the struggling Miners and a win brings Frank Wilson’s squad one step closer to a bowl berth. Here are our predictions.

Javi Cardenas

It wasn't pretty but UTSA was able to pull off a victory in Houston against Rice. This week the Miners come into to town riding a five game losing streak. UTEP is coming off a bye just like Rice the week before. Expect the Miners to play the Runners' tough. UTSA does seem to play significantly better at home and the Miners are just not very good this year. UTSA will need to establish a running game early and take the pressure off Sturm. UTEP has a sneaky good pass defense. This one will be close early, if UTSA puts it away early in the fourth quarter.

Prediction: UTSA 24, UTEP 13

The UTEP series is always such a weird one to pick. Road teams are undefeated in the series while the team that was expected to be better in the preseason has always had the tables turned by the preseason underdog. With the Miners on a five game losing streak they're going to be desperate to turn the tide as the vultures start to swarm over head coach Sean Kugler.

I think the Miners will look much improved under Ryan Metz coming out of the bye week and Aaron Jones will be Aaron Jones but the Roadrunners' surprising defense should be able to keep UTEP's offense from really exploding. Give me the Roadrunners in a feisty and hard fought game.

Prediction: UTSA 24 UTEP 17

UTEP is capable of winning this game. It’ll take UTSA playing down a level and I expect the Roadrunners to come out strong after struggling to a one-point win at Rice. Being back at home and on a winning streak should energize this team enough to beat a one-dimensional offense like the one UTEP brings to town. Running back Aaron Jones is an NFL talent, but the Miners don’t sport much else help on offense and the quarterback position is still in the air due to inconsistency and injury questions. UTSA won’t score points at will against a strong UTEP front-seven. The Roadrunners should score enough to win this game, however.

Prediction: UTSA 31, UTEP 20
