Coming off a Kennesaw State performance in which the Offensive line had some inconsistency in push and leverage UTSA ended up with only average rushes of 2.2 yards per carry. With 24 Running back and 10 Quarterback attempts, the run game will need to be meaningfully effective in this match up against a much bigger defensive line in Texas State. Last year the Roadrunners averaged 2.9 yards per carry on 54 attempts. Roadrunners have got to get to Road Blocking to beat Texas State. It’s going to be an uphill battle in the trenches and we have got to do better.
THE TIME IS MCCOWN
I understand it’s early and teams are “vanilla “in schemes versus perceived lesser opponents in week 1. Texas State gave up 27 points to Lamar and gave up 4 explosive plays in the pass game of 20 yards or more. This is something I think the Roadrunners with a confident and dangerous combination of McCown and his receiving corps can violate the Bobcats secondarywith. Coming off of a 300+ yard performance and 4 explosive plays of over 29 yards, I look for McCown and Company to find holes in the defense and gouge at multiple times against the Bobcats.
CLEAN HOUSE
10 penalties for over 100 yards is uncharacteristic and unacceptable at any point of the season. UTSA will not beat Texas State if they are assisting with free yards to their detriment. Pre snap and post whistle penalties were costly against Kennesaw state and kept the Owls in the game and made it closer than the game felt and should have been. In a rivalry emotional penalties can rip defeat from the jaws of victory. Last year in a 20-13 victory over Texas State there was only 1 penalty called against UTSA. A major Key to this victory is having a clean game and checking emotions while playing fast and physical can win this game.
