PACK YOUR DEFENSE
The most inescapable stat for the Traylor regime is the inconsistency of the defense on the road. Historically being +10 ppg higher on road than home. This year the road opponents beginning the season are the best schools they will face this year away from home (52.5 ppg on road, 11.5 ppg home ). East Carolina will push the defense and present opportunities to make plays. As long as the Roadrunner’s Defense can capitalize, it will help the team’s effort. Make sure the Defense is packed for the trip though.
NEXT UP, STEP UP
Given the high scoring 1st half (31 points)of last season’s match up, there needs to be high energy from the jump on the road to begin this one! Who will answer the call!? It took a 350+ yard passing effort and 180 yard receiving effort from players no longer on team. Who will it be to STEP UP in this year’s matchup!? This is the type of conference and maturing matchup that’s needed at this moment!
3RD AND…
Teams are only converting 38.4 % of 3rd down attempts against the Pirates. On offense UTSA will need to keep themselves in manageable 3rd down situations when the moment arises. UTSA is converting around 40%. It will keep the East Carolina defense at bay and honest. I think this UTSA squad can get some positive momentum with short to go downs in these scenarios. If there is trait development to this squad it is being able to provide momentum moments, but the ride can take them either way. Let’s make and keep it positive. 3rd down conversion rate is a major key.
