RUNNING BACKS - 6 scholarships used
SR - Deven Boston, Halen Steward
JR - B.J. Daniels
SO - Brenden Brady
FR - Ronnie Jackson, Sincere McCormick
Analysis: Many a story has been written about the struggles of the UTSA offense last season and the running game was no different. The Roadrunners as a team finished with 1,021 net yards of rushing. If one running back accounted for that total it would have ranked 58th in the country for individual rushing stats. Roadrunner fans will watch closely this season to see what kind of improvement the Roadrunner offense shows.
B.J. Daniels - Any preview of the UTSA running backs should begin with the guy who led the team in rushing yards last season. B.J. Daniels finished the 2018 season with 321 yards and three touchdowns on 87 carries last season. Daniels also caught four passes for 27 yards in 2018. Daniels will enter fall camp as the heir apparent to the starting role he shared with Jalen Rhodes last season.
Brenden Brady - Brady will be considered a strong candidate to take up the second spot in the Roadrunners running back committee. Last season Brady ran for 221 yards and one touchdown on 49 carries. Brady also had eight catches for 44 yards and had one pass attempt in the season finale.
Halen Steward - Not many teams in college football still use a fullback in their offense. Steward has made his home in the spot between the quarterback and the running back. Steward played in every game last season and had two rushing attempts for nine yards. In the passing game Steward caught four passes for 14 yards and scored a touchdown. Steward will enter his senior season looking to improve on his 2018 season.
Sincere McCormick - Though only a freshman Sincere McCormick will have a lot of eyes on him in fall camp. The former Converse Judson Rocket is the local headliner of the incoming crop of 2019 Roadrunners. There will be some who think he can become the next Jarveon Williams (another Rocket-turned-Roadrunner) but the best thing to do will be to wait and see. McCormick does have the ability as he finished his high school career with 3,407 yards and 43 touchdowns.
Deven Boston - Boston came to UTSA before last season but suffered a season ending injury. At the JUCO level Boston earned first team all-conference and led Santa Ana to a conference championship in 2017 with 186 carries for 1,243 yards and 17 touchdowns. Fall camp will provide Boston a chance to earn a spot in the top half of the Roadrunners running back group.
Ronnie Jackson - The Frank Wilson-New Orleans connection helped the Roadrunners get a running back from one of the powerhouse programs in the Crescent City. Jackson comes to UTSA from Edna Karr High School. While he was a Cougar Jackson helped Karr to win three straight Louisiana 4A state championships. In his senior season Jackson rushed for 1,078 yards and 11 touchdowns. Along with McCormick, Jackson can use fall camp as a chance to give the Roadrunners a glimpse at what might be the future of the running back corps.
Prediction: .There is a lot of talent in the Roadrunner running back corps this season. Among the young running backs, Sincere McCormick could be the star but it also wouldn't be surprising if he gets a red-shirt this season. The Roadrunner faithful will be hoping that, regardless of who is carrying the ball, the stable of running backs can run farther than they did last season. If that happens the Roadrunners will have a chance in any game.
