When is a Roadrunner a GOAT? When it’s Devin Brown
Eric Moreno

UTSA began playing basketball in time for the 1981-82 season. In that time, hundreds of players have appeared on the court at the Convocation Center for the Roadrunners. However, when it comes to determining the program’s GOAT – it’s Greatest of All Time – it is pretty easy to land on Devin Brown.

Brown shattered all of San Antonio’s high school basketball records while being an unlikely star at the now defunct West Campus High School. While playing for the Cougars, Brown became the all-time leading scorer in the San Antonio area.

He fielded multiple Division I offers before deciding on UTSA and became an instant star during the 1998-99 season. Before he was done, Brown would be named Southland Conference Freshman of the Year, First Team All-Conference three times, record the first triple double in program history – in 2001 against Louisiana-Monroe – and would be the first player to have his number retired.

Now, that is just his collegiate career; this doesn’t even factor in that he is only the second Roadrunner to play in the NBA – the only with a certain team in silver and black – and become the first player in school history to win an NBA title.

After a stellar 10 year career in professional basketball, Brown called it a day and decided to settle down back here in his hometown (yes, he was born in Ogden, Utah, but he got here as soon as he could as the old saying goes). He recently took some time to talk about his love of San Antonio, his time with the Spurs, and what being a Roadrunner has meant to him.
