UTSA Baseball will open the season this Friday night when they welcome the UT-Arlington Mavericks to Roadrunner Field for a four-game weekend series.

The Roadrunners will play their 2024 season in an improved Roadrunner Field that includes new seating behind home plate and expanded dugouts. The hope among the program is the same shared by Ray Kinsella in Field of Dreams: "If you build it, they will come"

UTSA has been doing some building on the diamond, not just in the stands. In each of the last two seasons the Roadrunners have won 38 games, one win short of the program record for wins set by the 1994 and 2008 Roadrunners.

Until a late season swoon, it looked like the 2023 team might become the first marathon of Roadrunners to reach the 40-win plateau. Instead they fell two wins short after suffering an early exit from their final Conference USA tournament.

Now the Roadrunners will hit the field in 2024 looking to go beyond the exploits of the 2022 and 2023 teams, not just in terms of wins but also in reaching the NCAA tournament, a place no Roadrunner ballplayer has been since the birds of 2013 played in the Corvallis Regional as champions of the WAC.

The Roadrunners came close to winning Conference USA a couple of times in their 10-year run in that conference. Now they are embarking on a new journey in the first year as members of the American Athletic Conference. UTSA is in a good spot to compete in the new conference after finishing in the top three of Conference USA in both of its last two seasons in that circuit.

UTSA has several newcomers on the team this year but a core group of upperclassmen will hope to keep pushing for new heights and giving the people of San Antonio a reason to make the drive up Barshop Boulevard and see the birds ply their trade in the renovated Bird Bath.
