UTSA is back home this weekend which is probably a good thing because the Roadrunners are 3-0 at home this season and 26-3 at home in the Jeff Traylor Era. That is about it for the good. This week's opponent, Memphis, is 7-1 on the season and 3-1 in conference play. In July this was picked as a top game of the season. Now as it turns to November it has lost a little luster with UTSA sitting at 3-5 and 1-3 in conference. The collapse last week at Tulsa has also taken some of the shine off this one. UTSA might be able to keep it close for awhile, but Memphis will snap the Roadrunner home win streak.

Finding an unprecedented offensive rhythm last week, UTSA heads home to battle the University of Memphis. The Tigers are rolling lately, leaving the Roadrunners with a lot on their plate to deal with Saturday. Facing a top quarterback in the American Conference, I expect UTSA’s defense on high alert all game. If UTSA plays smart penalty-wise, digs deep on defense, and rediscovers the run game… they might have a chance.

So far in 2024, this Roadrunner football team has yet to show any measure of consistency. As soon as all hope looks lost, they show a positive moment that feels like the season could turn around. Once things start moving in a good direction, they shift into reverse and end up worse than before. Some fans may find that to be an uncharitable assessment, but UTSA has just one conference win, multiple contenders for “worst program loss,” and bowl eligibility is all but out of reach. Have I lost faith in the players or staff? No and no, but neither would I bet on them. That needs to change before the damage extends beyond a single season.

The Roadrunners (3-5, 1-3 American Athletic Conference) have not had the season they have been accustomed to, and that was clear with an epic meltdown last weekend at Tulsa. Now, they will host Memphis (7-1, 3-1 AAC), who is right there at the top of the conference race. I think the Roadrunners will keep this one close for a little while, but the loss last weekend is the type that sticks with a team for a while and is going to be a tough one to overcome. Plus, the Tigers have won their last four games, while UTSA has dropped theirs.

This is not what you want if you are UTSA at this moment in an opponent like Memphis. A confident and talented squad rolls into the Alamodome taking on a Roadrunners team that has been entertaining but unsuccessful in the win column. I see a loss at home on the horizon for UTSA. There is a bit too much needed to clean up for me to foresee UTSA taking this matchup.

Well that did not go as planned. This season has not gone as planned. We can talk about why and how this season has played out at a later date. For now, UTSA will need to figure out how to bounce back from one of the worst loses in program history against an extremely talented Memphis team. If this Roadrunner team was healthy I think they would have a pretty good shot at this. Healthy they are not. UTSA will not have the horses to keep up with the Tigers for four quarters.
