In the spring of 2014 UTSA's track and field team began their first season as members of Conference USA. The first two months of 2014 saw the team take part in the indoor season. The spring months of 2014 saw UTSA's outdoor season and included the Roadrunners hosting their first meet at the track at Park West.

UTSA's track team was the last sport to begin its time in Conference USA and in 2023 it would be the last group of Roadrunners to compete as members of Conference USA. During its decade in Conference USA the Roadrunner track team was the most consistent program in the UTSA athletics department.

The track and field team was one of two programs at UTSA to have the same coach all 10 years they were a member of Conference USA. Aaron Fox led the Roadrunners all 10 years in Conference USA.

Fox came to UTSA as an assistant coach for both men's and women's teams in 2000. Two years later Fox was promoted to head coach of the men's program. In 2008 Fox took over as head coach of the women's track program as well.

The Roadrunners had a successful decade on the track in Conference USA. UTSA's men's team had 83 individual wins, 62 individual second place finishes and 78 individual third place finishes during the indoor meets.

In its 10 years competing in Conference USA, the men's team finished second five times at the indoor conference championships. There were also four third place finishes all of which came after the team's inaugurals season in Conference USA when they finished seventh in the indoor championships. UTSA had 27 individual conference champions in indoor during their decade in Conference USA.

The women's team had 46 individual wins, 56 individual second place finishes and 59 individual third place finishes in indoor meets. The Roadrunner women finished second in the team standings in their first Conference USA. They also had two third place finishes in back-to-back years of 2021 and 2022. UTSA had 11 individual conference champions in women's indoor during the decade in Conference USA.

UTSA men had 153 individual wins, 175 individual second place finishes and 155 individual third place finishes in their outdoor meets during the 10 years in Conference USA. The Roadrunner men won the Conference USA outdoor championships in 2014 and 2015. UTSA's men's team also had two second place finishes and three third place finishes in Conference USA outdoor championships. The Roadrunner men had 25 individual conference champions at the Conference USA outdoor championships between 2014-2023.

The women's team had 120 individual wins, 139 individual second place finishes and 119 individual third place finishes. UTSA's women's team finished third at the Conference USA outdoor championships twice in 2021 and 2023 and had a second place finish in 2022. The Roadrunner women had nine individual conference champions at the Conference USA outdoor championships.

Notable moments and Players

UTSA's track team had several athletes make it to the NCAA Championships in its decade in Conference USA.

The Roadrunner men qualified for the indoor NCAA championships three times. One of those qualifications was in 2020 but the indoor championship was not held that year which kept Gary Haasbroek from a chance to improve on his 2019 NCAA championship when he finished 10th in the Heptathlon. Haasbroek was also the conference champion for the Heptathlon in 2019.

In 2022 UTSA's men's team qualified as a team for the indoor championship and finished in 47th place. Jemuel Miller was the top Roadrunner at the 2022 NCAA indoor championship, finishing sixth in the triple jump.

UTSA's women's team got one qualifier into the NCAA indoor championships in 2022 and 2023. In 2022 Ingeborg Gruenwald finished 13th in the long jump. The 2023 Roadrunner representative at the NCAA indoor championship was Oreoluwa Adamson. Adamson finished 15th in the long jump.

In the outdoor meets, UTSA men qualified as a team in 2014 and 2023. In 2014 UTSA finished tied for 38th in the team standings and in 2023 the Roadrunner men finished tied for 61st place. The Roadrunners sent at least one qualifier in every season except for 2021. The entire 2020 season was cancelled because of the pandemic.

The Roadrunner men in 2014 were led by Richard Garrett's fourth place finish in shot put at the NCAA outdoor championships. Keyunta Hayes finished sixth in the 400-meter hurdles in 2014 and a year later finished 10th in the same event.

Hayes was joined by Jurmarcus Shelvin in the 2015 NCAA championships 400-meter hurdles. Shelvin finished 23rd in the hurdles.

Other notable Roadrunner men's track athletes include Bashiru Abdullahi who competed in the 2022 and 2023 national championships in the 110-meter hurdles and Jack Turner who finished seventh in the decathlon at the 2023 NCAA championships.

Notable members of the women's team include Whitney Flannel. Flannel finished 11th in the high jump at the 2015 NCAA championships. Maia Campbell reached the NCAA championships in 2021 and finished in 22nd place.

In 2022 Danielle Spence finished 14th in the triple jump at the NCAA championships. A year later, in 2023, Adamson reached the outdoor NCAA championships in the long jump and finished in 23rd place.

UTSA's track teams will now have to wait until January of 2024 for the start of their next indoor season. The outdoor season will begin next March. Both the men's and women's teams will be entering the American with hopes for a bright future built on a successful decade in Conference USA.
